If you are a parent that does not coach or function as a team manager and are looking for a way to get involved this is a nice opportunity to participate. Email swysc@whidbey.com .
Here is some general information about the tournament. Soccerfest is a celebration of youth soccer on Whidbey Island. This activity is part soccer tournament and soccer carnival. Activities include our end of spring season tournament for all spring teams, lots of food, awards and prizes, and soccer skills stations for all members of the family to try. This spring season Soccerfest 2009 will be held at the South Whidbey Sports Complex on Saturday, June 13th beginning at 10 am and running until 4 pm.
Tournament: All teams in the WISL spring league will be participating. Admission is free for all teams and spectators. All teams will play at least two games regardless of wins or loses. All games are scheduled to start on the hour and will be 40 minutes in length with five minute halftimes. Consider the regular season training for the main event and this is the main event! Expect coaches and players to be more focused and trying harder. The kids will really enjoy this more competitive environment!
Tournament Rules: Same as WISL rules but ties will be decided by an 8 minute golden goal period then followed by the best of 3 penalty kicks and even to head to head PK's if still necessary.
Soccer Carnival: On the Carnival side we will have four different soccer skills stations set up for anybody regardless of age to test your soccer skills. A ticket is required to participate. These can be purchased for $.50 each. Each player will be given two free tickets after their first game. This will be fun for the players to challenge their parent's, siblings, and even coaches. Medals will be given to participants scoring the highest in each division. Everybody is encouraged to participate! The kids will enjoy seeing adults struggle so don't be shy and give them some entertainment! Below is a quick description of each soccer skill station: Juggling: One ticket buys you up to 5 attempts at juggling a soccer ball or only three tries if you are U-14 or above. We will only be counting the highest number juggled on each attempt. Shooting Power: Kick your hardest into a goal and have a radar gun clock the exact speed of your shot. One ticket buys two attempts. If the grass is wet be careful! Scoring: Hit the corners of the goals and score big. One ticket buys five shoots and each shot can score points. Total points is recorded. Accuracy wins the day here. Obstacle Course: Sprint, dribble, shoot, run a slalom course, shoot again, and sprint again. Sounds easy? It's not. The course length will be adjusted based on age division so there will be something fun to try and watch all morning long. Each attempt will be timed to the hundreds of a second. One ticket gives you one try. (Hint: Your second attempt will be your fastest!). Tickets can be purchased for $.50 each. All participating players in the tournament will receive two free tickets after their first game.
Games start at 10am. Soccer skills stations will open at 10:30 am and close at 3 pm. All Championship games start at 3pm. Food and beverages will be open and available for most of the tournament. We will be looking for volunteers to help with parking, food and beverage, ticket sales, skills stations, and running the sidelines with flags to help the officials with out of bounds. This event runs regardless of weather conditions. Dress in layers and bring sun block for the kids! See you all on June 13th!! |
